Archant

Get bitten by the Velociraptor bug this July and raise money for North Devon Hospice.

A brand new cycling event will be prowling the roads of North Devon this summer.

The Velociraptor will be unleashed on Sunday, July 13, giving riders the chance to tackle some beastly but beautiful roads on a 100 kilometre circular route to raise money for North Devon Hospice.

It replaces the annual Devon Coast to Coast event and Emma Lowe, from the hospice’s fundraising team, said that this monster of a ride is certainly one not to be missed: “It will be a tough but very enjoyable day.

“You will incorporate some challenging climbs but the reward for that will be the most incredible scenery and some really fun descents. The Velociraptor is an event for everyone from hobby cyclists right up to serious riders.”

Starting and finishing at South Molton Rugby Club, the route takes in a 100km loop around Burrington, High Bickington, Barnstaple, Ilfracombe, Combe Martin and the edge of Exmoor.

It is open to cyclists aged 12 upwards, but children must be accompanied by an adult.

The Velociraptor is the brainchild of Emma and Andy Unstead, a keen cyclist from Barnstaple and an organiser of the Coast to Coast event.

“I’ve ridden from John O’Groats to Land’s End and I can safely say that nowhere in the country has better cycling roads than North Devon,” he said.

“We’ve taken a lot of time to prepare a really fantastic route, which incorporates some of the most beautiful parts of our area. We’ve chosen some great roads that not many will know but are simply perfect for cycling.”

Places are limited to 300 for this year, and there are around 100 left for those who wish to take part. Visit www.northdevonhospice.org.uk to enter online. Riders are asked to raise a minimum of £50 in sponsorship.
