Batsworthy wind farm plans approved

13:12 22 October 2012

Developer wins appeal against council as planning inspector gives his verdict.

PLANS for a wind farm at Batsworthy Cross have been approved today (Monday) by a government inspector after a lengthy public inquiry.

North Devon Council’s refusal of the application for the nine 103 metre turbines at Knowstone has been overturned following an appeal by developer RWE npower renewables.

It lodged an appeal after the planning committee turned down applications for the 18 MW scheme plus a temporary anemometer mast against its own officers’ recommendations.

There had been strenuous opposition in the six years since the plans were first proposed, with 660 people registering their objection.

RWE claim the wind farm would generate enough energy to power 8,700 homes and create a community fund of more then £330,000.

The inquiry under inspector Rupert Grantham took place over 15 days at Bishops Nympton Parish Hall between June and September.
