Town Council votes to reduce its portion of the tax by 2.8 per cent
BARNSTAPLE Town council has bucked the local trend by announcing a 2.8 per cent reduction in its council tax.
Councillors voted for a zero per cent precept, but due to other cuts council tax in the town will actually be reduced.
The news comes as Ilfracombe councillors voted for a 7.3 per cent increase, while Bideford will rise by four per cent.
A Band D property will now pay £70.96 per annum for the town council portion of tax – a drop of £2.09.
Town Clerk Anne Jenkins said the news was a result of ‘careful budgeting’.
“This is part of a sustainable budget after making savings on grounds maintenance and other services and it just worked out as a very tight budget, which the councillors voted for, to make sure it was as effective as possible.”
