Door staff will continue to patrol the weekend streets until at least March after successful autumn and winter trial.

THE Barnstaple street marshal scheme has been extended until the end of March following a successful trial.

It began in September and sees door staff carrying out high visibility patrols around Queen Street every Thursday, Friday and Saturday between 3am and 4am.

Funded by Safer North Devon and Fever and Boutique nightclub, the marshals have so far dealt with 70 incidents, ranging from minor arguments to helping people suffering the effects of alcohol.

“The scheme has been well received, not only for deflecting more serious incidents on the streets, but also offering reassurances to others who are out at that time of night,” said neighbourhood beat manager PC Paul Daw, who has been leading the project.

“We hope the marshals’ presence will continue to deter any trouble and ensure everyone has a fun, safe time in the town centre.”

Safer North Devon is exploring additional avenues of funding, to see if the scheme can continue into the new financial year. There are also plans to look at extending it into parts of Bideford.

As part of the patrols, the marshals deal with any issues they come across, liaising with other door staff, encouraging the use of BARC radios, linking in with street pastors and police officers when needed.

They also help manage taxi and takeaway queues and remove any bottles or glasses from the streets.

Vikki Whitworth, the manager at Fever and Boutique, added: “As a business, we are keen to ensure that our customers enjoy a good night out and stay safer when they leave our venue. This scheme helps achieve this. In fact, a recent survey we carried out on behalf of Safer North Devon showed 70 percent of the people we asked felt safe going out at night, as a result of the street marshals.”
