POLICE are hoping to shine a light on vandals suspected of shooting 40 streetlights in Barnstaple.

Lights on the cycle path near Fortescue Road in Newport are believed to have been shot at with an air rifle or similar weapon.

Officers investigating the incident are unsure when the damage was done as the lights they were last checked in September 2012.

But Devon County Council workers called to deal with a suspected power failure this week were shocked to discover the real cause of the damage.

PCSO Hannah Denton said: “There have been a number of similar incidents reported in the Newport area in the last couple of week, mainly involving air rifle damage to vehicles and properties.

“We are asking members of the public to report anyone carrying an air rifle, or any suspicious activity to the police.

“We would also remind people that it is an offence to carry an air rifle uncovered.”

Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to call police on non-emergency number 101 quoting log number CR/080195/14.
