Store and union workers at Tesco Extra in Barnstaple team up with racism charity to raise funds

Staff at one Barnstaple supermarket came together to show racism the red card on Thursday.

Tesco employees and members of the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (USDAW) trade union from across North Devon were at the Taw View Extra store raising money for Show Racism the Red Card.

They were joined by mayor of Barnstaple, Councillor Julie Hunt to help spread their message, as well as raising money with a raffle which included tickets to Plymouth Argyle and Exeter City and equipment from local football clubs.

Area organiser John Ford said: “Things like Brexit have given racism an excuse to raise its ugly head again.

“Everyone needs to be treated the same, it’s about one race – the human race.”

USDAW divisional officer Neil Ireland said: “This is about us as a trade union working with employees to say racism is not acceptable in any way, shape or form.”
