Purple Patch: Jamie Stone from Barnstaple plans to walk 102 miles for the Chemo Appeal in honour of well-known Barnstaple fundraiser Roy Evans.

INSPIRED by the Gazette article about the fantastic legacy of teenager Roy Evans, a Barnstaple fundraiser plans to walk 102 miles for the Chemotherapy Appeal.

After reading our story about a £50,000 donation from the Roy Evans Trust for the appeal, Jamie Stone plans to walk from Castle Cray in Somerset back to Barnstaple.

“Roy was my best friend, and after seeing the article I decided I wanted to raise funds for the Chemotherapy Unit in his memory,” he said.

He will begin the walk on September 26 and he expects it to take around three days. He will be joined by his wife Tracey, who is fundraising for The Alzheimer’s Society.

Roy was an inspirational young man from Bishops Tawton who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease in 1986, but undeterred led a campaign which raised thousands to build the Roy Evans Suite at the North Devon District Hospital.

Sadly he died in 1988 aged just 18 before the unit was built, but his parents Margaret and David were determined to see it completed in his memory.

His legacy lives on after the remainder of trust funds were recently donated to the Chemo Appeal.

You can support Jamie by donating on his JustGiving page www.justgiving.com/JamieStone or email stonejamie69@gmail.com for more details.
