Barnstaple Ex-Service and Social Club has changed its name in a bid to bring more members in.

The club on St George’s Road has been renamed Barnstaple Social Club.

Bar and entertainments manager John Britton said the move was made to try and bring younger members to the club and clear up some long-standing confusion.

He said: “For the last four years we’ve been trying to change the name because the general feeling in town was you had to an ex-service person, or family of one to join, but that’s not the case at all.

“We’ve spent a lot of time doing the club up. We were losing money, and it seemed to be that as older people passed on the club was dying with it. We felt we had to do something to rejuvenate the club.”

The social club, which has undergone an extensive refurbishment over the last few years, is open for hire three Saturdays of each month, with the other reserved for members’ club nights. Community groups also use the club’s facilities.

John added: “There aren’t many places like this in town where a 20-year-old can take their 70-year-old grandad for a game of snooker or pool, or a family can take their children and enjoy a night out.”

The club was known as the Barnstaple British Legion up until 2001, when it become the ex-service and social club.
