Tributes have flooded to a popular dog, described as ‘a part of the Barnstaple shopping scene’.

Gordon the Lurcher had become synonymous with Furniture Magpie in Boutport Street ever since shop owner Sam Baines plucked him from Dogs Trust Ilfracombe and gave him a home in March 2014.

The shop had only been open for a few months at that point, and Gordon became a ‘mascot’ for the business.

“I used to joke that he was head of PR for the shop,” said Sam. “Some people that I met wouldn’t know my name but they always knew him and he was a real conversation starter.”

Sam posted on the Furniture Magpie Facebook page following Gordon’s death last Tuesday, and was amazed to see more than 50 comments with tributes to the ‘gentle, velvet eared, sweetie’.

Gordon was described as ‘a beautiful-natured dog’ by many who posted online tributes.

“He was just the loveliest dog,” said Sam. “He was so good with people, and converted a few children who weren’t too sure about dogs before they met him.”

Gordon even inspired his own range of crockery, including popular mugs bearing his name, painted by employee and artist Abi Leworthy.

Another artist, Sophie Cobb, fell in love with him and produced postcard portraits of Gordon.

“I always joked I would have to do a state funeral when he died because of all the people who cared about him,” said Sam.

“He was a really funny animal that seemed to connect with people.”
