Barnstaple police tackle motor bike menace

Riders warned and bikes seized after a spate of illegal and dangerous riding on pavements and footpaths in the town.

BARNSTAPLE police have been cracking down on the mini motorcycle menace in the town after a spate of dangerous incidents.

From mid June to mid July, police received 17 calls from anxious residents of mini motos and motor bikes being driven perilously on pavements and footpaths in the Whiddon Valley and Westacott areas, often by riders not wearing helmets.

On July 22 a 19-year-old man was reported for driving without insurance and in a place other than on the road. A pit bike was also seized.

The next day, a 20-year-old was reported for the same offences and police said the results were made possible thanks to the help of residents who reported the incidents.

Today (Monday), a passerby at Pilton reported a bike had almost run them over and the rider was issued with a Section 59 order, meaning if they ride anti-socially again their bike will be seized.

“Please contact the police if you see motor bikes being used in an anti social manner,” said PCSO Hannah Denton.

“It could be the piece in the puzzle, that last bit of evidence that is needed to get the offending motor bike off the road.”
