In a town that has changed so much, time has stood still for Barnstaple’s Albert Clock.

Built in 1862 to commemorate the death of Prince Albert, the affectionately-named ‘Four-Faced Liar’ – so called because each of the tower’s four faces tells a slightly different time – the clock tower has seen Barnstaple evolve around it.

Dear old Albert was restored – bell and all – in 2009.

Very few Barumites have seen inside the landmark clock tower but Barnstaple photographer Simon Ellery was given special permission to capture the clock’s inner workings earlier this month.

Check out Simon’s pictures and watch his interview with Ian Parker, Barnstaple Town Councils’ amenities and property manager.
