Tyrannosaurus Rex and Pterodactyl created from recycled cardboard by Barnstaple company Atlas Packaging.

A PACKAGING specialist in Barnstaple has made its first forays into the retail display sector with the creation of a six ft dinosaur.

Atlas Packaging created the beast out of 100 per cent recycled cardboard for the window of Re:Store Junior, a new charity shop in Barnstaple raising money for North Devon Against Domestic Violence.

Dave King, head of structural design at Atlas, said: “The design is based on using the skeleton as the backbone for the structure.

“Each ‘bone’ is a divider that slots into the other, providing strength and stability to the next.

“As the corrugated bones are slotted into place the structure really begins to come to life. It was a challenge to make but great fun, too.”

Other recent structures for community initiatives include a Tyrannosaurus Rex, a formula one car, a cow and a 3ft wide Pterodactyl.

Mr King added: “Creating this structure fulfilled two important criteria for Atlas.

“Firstly, it gave us the opportunity to support a member of the local community as well as a local charity, and secondly it provided us with a window of opportunity to showcase the design possibilities associated with corrugated board.

“We hope to be able to recruit more retailers looking for environmentally friendly and cost effective shop fixtures and fittings as customers as a result of this initiative.”
