The 23-year-old was fined after being restrained outside Fever nightclub in Barnstaple last month.

A YOUNG man was fined by magistrates after he became so abusive towards police officers on a night out in Barnstaple he had to be restrained.

Daniel Gammon, 23, of South View, Braunton, pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly at North Devon Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

He was first seen by officers at around 2.30am on The Square on December 21.

The court heard Gammon made rude gestures and was abusive towards the officers, but was dragged away by a group of friends.

Half an hour later police were called to Fever nightclub in Queen Street where Gammon had been physically restrained by the door staff.

He was abusive and threatening towards officers, refused to get into the police car and once in custody he continued the abuse and was put straight into a cell.

Magistrates heard Gammon had 15 previous convictions and last appeared in court earlier this month for motoring offences.

He was fined £133 which was added to his outstanding court fines of £435.

When Gammon told magistrates he could not pay the amount at £25 a week, lead magistrate Linda Houlford told him: “You have quite a bit of money put aside a month for drinking and smoking, perhaps you can use some of this.”
