24-year-old will face Crown Court hearing to determine sentence after pleading guilty on Friday

A BARNSTAPLE man went home to arm himself with a knife and returned to a party he had been asked to leave, a court has heard.

Benjamin Haywood, 24, of Buller Road will face a hearing at Exeter Crown Court after magistrates heard how he had got into a fight after returning to the party on April 20, although he did not draw the knife.

The court heard that Haywood had been drinking heavily and had taken cocaine before being forced to leave a party at a friend’s house.

He had then returned with a knife tucked into his trousers, and shouted to try to get back into the party.

“What started off as a fairly convivial evening certainly took a turn for the worse,” said defence solicitor Paul Waters.

“But he didn’t pull the knife out from the front of his trousers and he is certainly remorseful for his actions.”

Haywood pleaded guilty to possessing a knife in a public place at North Devon Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

Magistrates deemed their sentencing powers to be insufficient due to a number of aggravating factors, including alcohol and the fact Haywood had been involved in an altercation.

Haywood will appear at Exeter Crown Court on June 12, and remains on conditional bail not to enter Fort Street or be in a public place while drunk until that date.
