Volunteers and groups roll up their sleeves as the big annual clean up gets underway throughout this week, building up to a free Community Day and Dog Show on Saturday, May 3.

PEOPLE of all ages have been doing their bit to ensure Barnstaple is spick and span for the summer with the return of the annual Tidy Up Our Town campaign.

Throughout this week, schools, community groups, Barnstaple Town Council staff, officers and hundreds of volunteers will be litter picking, weeding, painting, scrubbing and generally doing their bit.

It all began on Monday and culminates on Saturday with a free Community Day and Family Dog Show at Pilton Park.

Tidy Up Our Town is organised by the town council’s environment committee, which provides safety equipment, litter pickers and plenty of bin bags for all those taking part.

These include Pathfield School, Pilton Community College, Ashleigh and Sticklepath primary schools, St John Ambulance, Barnstaple Rotary Club, Devon and Cornwall Housing, 12th North Devon (Pilton) Scouts, Barnstaple Sea Cadets and the Pilton Gig Club.

The Children’s Summer Club at Gorwell will be repainting the Gorwell underpass, while staff at both Whiddon Valley and Roundswell McDonald’s restaurants will be carrying out litter picks.

Saturday’s Community day will be officially opened by the Mayor, Councillor Lesley Brown, at 11am, followed by welly wanging, games, skittles and sideshows.

The Family Dog Show begins at 12.30pm and there are a variety of categories with prizes to be won.

Throughout the day there will be face painting, bird box making, a 45ft assault course for all ages, the chance to make wooden animal sculptures and much more.
