Asia contract provides welcome boost for local engineers.

BARNSTAPLE engineering firm J+S Ltd has won a major contract to supply a torpedo launcher for the Thai navy.

The Pottington-based business was selected by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering to supply the new system, designed to fire a range of Mk44 and Mk46 torpedoes.

The launcher is set to be installed on a new Royal Thailand Navy warship in March 2016.

Andy Toms, J+S managing director, said: “J+S Ltd is delighted and proud to receive this major contact from DSME.

“We are increasing looking overseas for business growth opportunities and have identified East Asia and the ASEAN region of great potential.

“This order is a welcome boost to our Barnstaple-based business and raises our profile internationally as an independent supplier of lightweight torpedo launchers.

“We have supplied and supported similar systems to the UK Royal Navy for many years and look forward to developing a strong business relationship with DSME and the Royal Thailand Navy.”
