There’s a packed programme of events planned in Barnstaple in the run-up to Christmas, kicking off with the town’s light switch-on event on Sunday, November 19.
Back with a new format and more lights, this year’s Christmas Light Switch On event promises to be better than ever.
Here’s what to expect on the day:
11am: Street food party in the Pannier Market, with entertainment throughout the day, including the annual Children in Need Tapathon world record attempt at 1pm - come along and cheer them on.
4pm: Move to The Square for a magical, festive mix of entertainment and music on the stage until the countdown to the big light switch-on. Yazzy will be singing alongside a children’s choir at 4pm, followed by a performance by Reuben Jones, featuring Small Town Jones, at 4.45pm.
5.15pm: Before the main lights are illuminated, there will be a chance to support the North Devon Hospice and Children’s Hospice South West’s Light up a Life campaign as a special star is lit up to mark the launch of the appeal at 5.15pm.
5.30pm: There will then be a sneak preview of what to expect from Beauty and the Beast, Barnstaple’s most spectacular pantomime ever, as two of the stars – Bobby Crush from ITV’s Benidorm and Opportunity Knocks fame (Dame Ethel Eiffel) and chart-topper and Eurovision favourite, Nicki French (The Witch) – take to the stage with special performances.
6pm: The big switch-on. After their performances, Bobby and Nicki will then be joined by Lisa Wallis from local charity ChemoHero to press the button and illuminating Barnstaple for the festive period. One of the main sponsors of Christmas in Barnstaple, Stagecoach, nominated Lisa for the honour of turning on the lights in recognition of the work they do and will be launching a special ChemoHero bus at the event. The bus features a special ChemoHero livery while inside you can learn more about the ChemoHero story and how to get involved.
Hopps and Chapple from local radio station, The Voice, will keep the party going and will be joined by Seth Conway, who will oversee the switching on of the lights.
