A BARNSTAPLE wildlife campaigner is embarking on a 114-mile march to Westminster to oppose the Government’s planned badger cull – on a mobility scooter.

Nick White, who suffers from Parkinson’s, will be joining fellow protesters on the 10-day fundraising trek which sets off from Gloucester on May 22.

The retired coach driver, 64, is taking part in the ‘Great Badger Trail’ with his boarder collie dogs Brodie and Buddy.

They will head through the Prime Minister’s own constituency of Whitney on route to Whitehall.

Nick, from Roundswell, said: “I just think that the badger cull is so wrong, especially after an independent parliamentary committee set up to measure the effects of the last cull found it to be such a huge failure in terms of target numbers, humaneness, and safety.

“The badger is a protected wildlife species yet the Government is out slaughtering them en masse.

“All the scientific evidence says that a cull will not have an effect; that if you kill all the badgers from one area, others will move in.

“The better solution lies in clamping down on cattle movements and increased bio-security on farms and at markets, alongside a program of badger vaccination.”

A licence to carry out a second trial cull in Somerset and Gloucestershire is due to commence on June 1.

The Government says a cull is necessary to limit the spread of bovine TB.

Money raised on the march will be used to help mount a campaign against the cull, or promote vaccination should a cull not take place.

Nick, who will be camping out along the way, added: “The march is being organised by people opposed to the cull. It is taking place to raise public awareness along the route and to get people out defending badgers in the cull areas.

“It’s going to be a bit rough for a few days but it will all be worth it for the badgers.”
