A BABY harbour porpoise was discovered dead on Westward Ho! beach by a dog walker yesterday (Thursday) evening.

Siobahn May Teape posted photos of the creature on Facebook last night asking for help to identify it.

A spokesperson from the Marine Conservation Society told the Gazette from the photos it looked like a juvenile harbour porpoise, which is fairly common in the Bristol Channel.

He said: “Porpoise often come closer to the shore to chase fish such as mackerel, herring, sprats or whitebait.

“It’s usual to see a number of strandings at this time of year, generally caused by collisions with boats, fishing nets or illness.

“There are at least 500 washed up on UK coasts every year.

“We are currently getting lots of reports of jellyfish blooms.”

Dead strandings can be reported to the Natural History Museum’s Cetacean Strandings Project on 0207 942 5155.

Live strandings should be reported to the RSPCA on 0300 1234999.
