A brother and sister have painted a chess set of Clovelly characters to celebrate their mother’s life.

A BROTHER and sister are holding a charity exhibition and auction night to celebrate the life of their late mother.

Milly Perham fell in love with painting the faces of Clovelly from an early age, but lost a seven year battle with cancer on March 29 last year, aged 72.

To mark the first anniversary of her death, her children Rachel and Stephen Perham will be exhibiting some of her paintings, some of which have never been seen, on March 23.

They’ll also be holding a charity auction with lots including a chess set they have made from Clovelly pebbles based on the village’s characters.

All the proceeds will go to the North Devon Chemotherapy Appeal, as Milly spent a lot of time being treated at the ward in North Devon District Hospital, said Rachel.

“The first year was always going to be hard and we wanted this to be a celebration of her life,” she said.

“Mum painted up until two weeks before she died, and all of her paintings were based on Clovelly characters.

“We both picked up a love of painting from her and this was our way of saying thank you to the hospital for all they did for her.”

Stephen, who is a fisherman and the current harbour master, said he, Rachel and their two brothers were the sixth generation of their family to live in the village.

“We’re one of the oldest families in the village; there aren’t many families left here anymore.

“My brother, father and grandfather were all fishermen, so that’s why we decided the pawns in the chess set should be lobsters.

“The rest of the characters are based on local characters; we painted one side each and didn’t see each others until the end, which was amusing.”

The king and queen represent Clovelly owners John Rous and his wife, the baron represents Royston Johns; the knight, John ‘Ticker’ Glover and the castles are the two Clovelly hotels, the New Inn and the Red Lion.

But Rachel and Steve are looking for more lots to be donated to the charity auction that will be held on the night.

“It could be anything from food for a hamper or a larger donation,” said Rachel.

The exhibition of Milly’s paintings will be held from 3pm at the Red Lion Hotel in Clovelly, and the charity auction and raffle will begin at 6pm.

For more information or to donate a raffle or auction prize contact Rachel on 07929 652191.
