The 21-year-old was seen staggering around Barnstaple, grabbing people and trying to hug them.
AN ARMY hopeful who admitted being drunk and disorderly on a night out in Barnstaple told a court he thought his drink had been spiked.
CJ Yarde, 21, of Moreton Park Road, Bideford, was arrested on June 21 after being seen on CCTV staggering around the town, hugging strangers and causing trouble.
When police tried to detain him, North Devon Magistrates Court heard that Yarde resisted arrest and grabbed an officer.
Yarde, who was unrepresented in court, said he was out celebrating as he was joining the Army on August 13 and was watching how much he drank.
He said he did not understand how he had been so intoxicated and thought his drink might have been spiked, apologising for his behaviour.
Magistrates fined him £65, and ordered him to pay a £20 victim surcharge and £85 in court costs.
