Five volunteers from the station have been rewarded for their hard work and service to the RNLI.

SEVERAL volunteers at Appledore lifeboat station have been honoured for their hard work and dedications in the RNLI’s New Year Honours.

Five volunteers - Robert Walker, Doug Spiller, Margaret Cracknell, Julie Turner and Wendy Dale – featured on the 2014 list.

Robert, 66, has collected for the RNLI since he was 13 and has now been awarded the RNLI gold badge for 20 years of serving as a donation box treasurer.

“I’m tickled pink that I’ve had this award, it came completely out of the blue,” he said.

“As a young lad I holidayed in this area and was inspired by the crew members. It’s such a wonderful job they do to inspire boys and girls.”

Niki Tait, spokesman for the station, added: “Robert’s relentless recruitment of businesses around the area to promote the RNLI by providing well displayed donation boxes, and their management, has brought in thousands of pounds of necessary funding for Appledore.”

Doug, 77, has retired as the sea safety officer after eight years, and was awarded a statuette. He joined the RNLI in Middlesex in 1974 and continued his support with Appledore when he moved to North Devon in 2004.

Margaret, who is president of the Appledore Lifeboat Fund Raising Guild received a gold badge. She joined the guild in 1982 and also spent several years as chairman.

Julie, who received a bronze badge, joined the guild in 1982 as its chairman and now serves as vice president.

Wendy, the current lifeboat operations manager, was awarded a special pair of inscribed binoculars by the RNLI trustees for her ‘devoted service with the Appledore management group.’

She started volunteering with the RNLI in 2002 as a fund raising guild committee member and has spent the last eight years in her role as operations manager.

Niki added: “We congratulate them all. Without our volunteers there would be no lifeboat service, either locally or nationally.”

The station will be holding a fund raising SOS Day on Saturday, January 25, welcoming visitors to the boat house to enjoy food and drink.

Sausages from the local butchers will be cooked by the crew and sold, with tea, coffee and shortbread for sale upstairs.

The event is free of charge and will run from 11am until 2pm at the lifeboat station.
