Crowds lined the streets of Appledore on Sunday to celebrate the fishing village’s annual carnival. Organised by Appledore Pirates, the event saw thousands of people turn out to watch the colourful procession.
This year’s Appledore Carnival Queen was Ellie Saltearn, aged 11, who is the fourth queen in a row to be picked that belongs to Appledore Gig Club, and is due to attend Bideford College.
Her attendants were Olivia Jackson, 10 and Winnie Evans, 10. The fairies were Kelsey May Spencer, six; and Martha Jackson, six.
The carnival parade was led by young pirate Kaiyron Bennett, aged five.
Appledore Pirates’ committee thanked everyone involved in the ‘fabulous’ day.
Julie Haughton, Appledore Pilot Gig Club junior coordinator, said: “For the fourth year running, Appledore Pilot Gig Club’s junior rowers have reigned over Appledore Carnival with Ellie Saltearn crowned as this year’s Queen.
“The club Pirate themed entry won them second place in the carnival, ending a fabulous couple weeks with success in the estuary race, for Ladies A, Mixed Vets, Juniors and Ladies Captain Sarah Thomas winning the salmon boat race at Appledore & Instow Regatta events.
“Appledore will be competing locally at Barnstaple Regatta on 27th August.”
