Planning inspector upholds Torridge District Council’s decision to refuse permission for 22,900 solar panels.

PLANS for a giant solar farm in Buckland Filleigh, Beaworthy, have been dismissed by the planning inspectorate.

The application for the 15.8 hectare site at Chalhanger Farm – which would have incorporated 22,900 solar panels - was refused by Torridge District Council in April last year.

Lightsource Renewable Energy Ltd appealed the decision, but it was dismissed by planning inspector Wendy Burden.

Ms Burden said in her report: “I agree with the council that the site forms part of a generally remote and rural landscape in which there are few urban influences.

“The solar farm would introduce a series of uncharacteristic utilitarian structures across the open fields, together with security fencing and cameras.”

She added: “I find that the damage to the quality of the landscape in this remote and rural location would outweigh the benefits identified. I therefore dismiss the appeal.”
