FIREFIGHTERS had to use bolt croppers to free two youths locked in a public toilet in South Molton last night (Thursday).

The boys, thought to be in their early teens, raised the alarm after becoming locked in the Pannier Market toilets in Broad Street at around 6.45pm.

Police were unable to gain access to the toilet and contacted North Devon Council for the keys.

A key holder from Ilfracombe was called to open the door but a fire crew from the town was also needed to cut a padlocked chain and finally release the boys at around 8.30pm.

Police say they suspect “antics” may have been involved in the boys’ decision not to make themselves known to the person locking up the toilets for the night.

“Police took no further action but the incident has been referred to non-police organisations, who may want to charge for their inconvenience,” said a spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police.
