The 30-year-old was ordered to carry out unpaid work and pay compensation to the 12-year-old after throwing his bike.

AN ALCOHOLIC who threw a 12-year-old’s bike on the floor, jamming the wheels and smashing the bell, has been ordered to carry out unpaid work.

Robert Stedwell, 30, of Greenbank Close, Torrington, was walking in New Street, Bideford on February 13, when he came across a group of five youngsters.

Prosecutor Karen Ball said Stedwell approached the youths and pushed a 12-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, off his bike.

He then picked up the bike and threw it to the ground twice, before one of the youths grabbed it back and they ran off.

Stedwell was arrested after the boy’s stepmother called the police, who found him arguing with another, unknown man.

He told officers he had taken an overdose of pills and was taken to North Devon District Hospital.

In interview, Stedwell told officers he had been approached by the youths who were asking him for cigarettes.

He said he had an alcohol addition and he wanted to seek help with the issue.

Stedwell, who was unrepresented in court, said he had no excuse for his actions and been assigned a key worked for his problems with alcohol.

Magistrates sentenced him to undertake 50 hours of unpaid work and pay £50 in compensation to the child for the damage.

He was also ordered to pay a £60 victim surcharge and £40 contribution to costs.
