North Devon’s new state-of-the-art chemo unit will be a leading light for fighting cancer.

NORTH Devon’s brand new chemotherapy and day treatment unit is expected to take about 12 months to complete and will eventually benefit around 15,000 patients and their families each year.

Lead cancer nurse Charlotte Overney described today’s (Tuesday) turf cut as the ‘start of the future for cancer services in North Devon’.

The new single-storey 600 square metre extension to the west of the main hospital building will replace the existing outdated facilities on Level 2.

It will form an integral part of the hospital, with a wing of consulting and patient resource rooms and a wing of treatment rooms and support services.

The unit will wrap around a landscaped courtyard, have a stepped section to let sunlight into the heart of the building and feature a ‘green roof’ of sedum.

Architect David Wilson, of David Wilson Partnership Ltd, said the building would be fitted out to full technical NHS requirements and would provide an attractive, clinically efficient environment for patients and staff.

He said: “Because so many people have put such efforts into the fundraising, we have really tried hard with the design to achieve a distinctive and appealing project and to create a sheltered and suitable environment for patients.

“We have been tasked with achieving a BREEAM Excellent score – a government scheme for ensuring sustainable and energy efficient buildings.

“This means it will be highly insulated, well-lit and contain a highly efficient and finely controlled heating system driven by a heat pump.”

Mr Wilson said building contractor Morgan Sindall will be carrying out groundworks in the first few months, so much of their work will not be visible to passers-by.

“However, once the steel frame arrives the building will really begin to move forward, with completion anticipated in spring 2015,” he added.
