Gazette’s Give A Gift appeal helps bring Christmas cheer to hundreds of families across North Devon - and it’s all thanks to our readers.

GENEROUS donations from North Devon Gazette readers have provided hundreds of families in crisis with a little much-needed Christmas cheer.

The Northern Devon Foodbank has given out bags of Christmas treats, including cakes, biscuits and crackers, to more than 250 families.

Some of them have been so overwhelmed they have been reduced to tears, knowing Christmas will be that little bit easier this year.

And it’s all thanks to the generosity of North Devon Gazette readers, who between them have rallied together to collect more than 340kg of food, with more still coming in.

The food bank has been dishing out the bags of festive food alongside its usual food parcels, which are given to people in a short-term food emergency.

But it has also been delivering the parcels to families helped by the Christmas Project run by TTVS, the Torridge Council for Voluntary Service (CVS).

Duncan Withall, of the food bank, said the charity had taken over the project this month, providing 120 families with supermarket vouchers over Christmas.

Teresa Chance, of the public health nursing team in Bideford, was picking up some of the parcels from the food bank.

She told the Gazette: “I gave out two parcels this morning and the families were reduced to tears, they were just so overwhelmed.”

Duncan added: “Without the donations we have received from this appeal, we would not have been able to provide these families with a Christmas parcel too.

“We have been far busier than this time last year – we just haven’t stopped.

“I’d like to thank everyone who has donated to the appeal.”
