Community order and disqualification for Bideford driver

A Bideford driver was involved in two crashes after drink driving without insurance, North Devon Magistrates’ Court heard on Friday.

Christopher John A’Lee, 25, of Royston Road, Bideford was seen by a member of the public colliding with two other cars in his Toyota Celica near his home at just before 10.45pm. A small part of the car’s registration plate was found by police, and moments later PC Hellens saw the vehicle hit a wall at a nearby junction.

Mark Haddow, for the prosecution, said A’Lee ‘had been very drunk and couldn’t remember the crash’.

Tony Dart, for the defence, said A’Lee was ‘very embarrassed and ashamed’, but acknowledged that the defendant had been lucky that no one was seriously injured.

A’Lee said he had bought the car the day before the incidents, and thought he had insured the car online, although the insurance company had no record of this.

A’Lee had previously been charged with drink driving in 2007, which further aggravated his sentence. He was given a community order for 12 months, 120 hours of unpaid work and ordered to undertake a 10-session Education, Training and Employability course. He was also banned from driving for 42 months, received two endorsements on his license and told to pay fines and costs totalling £240.
