Bideford man ‘should never have gone in the car’ to buy his partner a chocolate bar

A BIDEFORD man who drove drunk without a driver’s licence in the early hours of the morning to buy his partner a chocolate bar has been handed a hefty fine and banned from driving for 18 months.

Lance Tinker, 34, of Ayres Close was spotted turning onto his road without his lights on by police at 1.45am on February 15.

North Devon Magistrates’ Court heard Tinker had drunk three pints of cider and didn’t think he would be over the limit. When breathalysed, the reading he gave was more than double the prescribed limit.

Tinker told police officers he was due to take his driving test in the coming days and only held a provisional licence.

Representing himself, Tinker said: “It was pure stupidity. I should never have gone in the car and I deserve anything that’s given to me to be fair.

“Not being able to drive will stop me from progressing in my career but it’s my own fault.”

Tinker was disqualified from driving for 18 months and ordered to pay a total of £415 in fines, costs and a victim surcharge.
