DAMIEN Hirst’s 67-foot sculpture Verity has arrived in Ilfracombe in the early hours of this morning (Monday).

The bronze statue, which has aroused so much interest and debate, was delivered at midnight on a large low loader vehicle.

She is expected to assembled and hoisted into place between October 14-16 although the final installation will be dependant on the weather. Contractors will spend a further week working on the sculpture before it is completed.

The finished product, a pregnant naked woman holding aloft a sword, bearing the scales of justice and stood upon a plinth of law books, was granted planning permission by North Devon Council last month.

The council has agreed to accept a 20-year loan of the artwork proposed by Mr Hirst’s organisation For Giving CIC.

Sections of the pier car park were closed today from just after midnight until 8am and similar arrangements will be in place from midnight until 8am on Sunday, October 14.

Some car parking spaces will remain unavailable until installation work is complete.

Councillor Mike Edmunds said: “Even though the car park will reopen on Sunday morning, there will be some parking spaces that remain cordoned off.

“However, this will only be temporary while work on Verity continues and there will still be plenty of other spaces available at the Pier car park.

“We also have alternative long-stay car parks open as usual in the town, so we hope that any disruption will be kept to a minimum.”

  • "can't see it from there house!" I think you mean "their house". Just saying, like.

  • They would be better off dumping it off the edge of the harbour. What an eyesore! And I'll bet the councillor that allowed this rubbish can't see it from there house!

  • Pat, have you actually seen the statue? Or are you condemning it in a "well I don't like the idea of this, so it should be banned" attitude?

  • I agree, it is an absolute eye sore and should never have been allowed. It is in very poor taste and not at all attractive. Why would any council think this was a good idea and to carry on with it when so many people object to it is just appalling!!

  • @PhatBoi if your only comment is my mis-spelling of the word 'there' why bother? Pat has added a comment saying how he she feels about the monstrosity but all you can do is pick the comment apart "have you actually seen the staue?" Well judging by the photos at the top of the page i reckon there is a fair bet they have. So what is your comment and opinion? Do you have one or are you just a troll here to pick on other legitimate posts?
