Charity walkers put best feet forward for annual Startrek Challenge over the weekend

Crowds of walkers took to the moor last night (Saturday) for the annual Startrek charity all-night walk.

Base camp was Brendon Barton Farm on Exmoor and 48 teams of walkers from across the region and beyond gathered there as dusk fell to prepare for an eight of 16 mile trekking challenge.

Funds from the event are divided between North Devon Hospice and Children’s Hospice South West, plus a third charity, which this year is Devon Freewheelers blood bike service.

It is organised by both Ilfracombe Rotary and Ilfracombe Compass Rotary clubs, with plenty of volunteers helping out with catering, communications, even search and rescue and first aid if required.

Speaking just before the walkers set off, Ann Doody, Startrek chairman, said: “Everybody is so up for it. When they come here everybody is just so ready to get out there and walk it – it’s such a good atmosphere.

“We have a lot of new teams this year and about five pub teams, plus about a dozen going for the corporate challenge.

“This is the first year we have gone in with Exmoor Ales and they are giving a cask of ale away for the pub team that completes it the quickest and the one that raises the most sponsorship.”
