MEDIEVAL melee mayhem came to Combe Martin on Saturday as St Peter Ad Vincula Parish Church hosted a weekend of events to celebrate the restoration of its historic 500-year-old roodscreen.

On Saturday the Devon Medieval Combat Alliance thrilled their audience with a few-holds barred display of mock combat, as well as chatting to visitors about their arms and armour.

In the church, living history re-enactors the Medieval Free Company demonstrated ancient crafts and talked about life in medieval times.

On Sunday visitors enjoyed guided tours of the church and roodscreen, plus the rare opportunity to climb the church tower. The rare screen and its 23 paintings of the saints was restored at a cost of £93,000 following grant funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Sainsbury Headley Trust and Devon Historic Churches Trust.
