Our reporter is off to Uganda and looking for your help to raise money for Amigos.

OUR reporter is off to Uganda with Barnstaple charity Amigos and she needs your help to raise as much money as possible for the charity before she goes.

Sarah Howells first visited Kira Farm last year where she interviewed the students there about their terrible pasts.

Inspired by their stories and their determination to change their lives, Sarah is now returning to Uganda to see how these young people are getting on after completing their time at Kira.

She said: “These young people are so determined to make the most of their lives, overcoming terrible tragedies in their past to try and make a better future.

“Every single student has a tragic story, from contracting AIDs, watching their parents murdered in front of their eyes or being sold into sex slavery.

“One of the students I met called Johnson was abducted at the age of 14 by the Lord’s Resistance Army and forced to become a child soldier before he miraculously escaped.

“Now Johnson has learnt the skills he needs to become a tailor and when I spoke to him was dreaming of setting up his own business to support his wife and children.

“I will be visiting him and other students I met at their homes to see how they are getting on using the skills they have gained at Kira.”

The charity was so eager for Sarah to return to Uganda it has even paid for her flight, but she wants to raise the money to cover the costs.

“If I can raise at least £600 that will more than cover my whole trip, as well as giving the charity some extra money towards its amazing work,” said Sarah.

On Saturday, October 20, Sarah will be holding a coffee morning at Trelawney at Ashford, from 9am until 11am.

There will be a special offer on a hot drink and cake with 25p for every one sold going to Amigos, and stalls offering second hand books, Christmas cards, African jewellery and gifts and Bodyshop products.

Sarah will also be running a raffle for £1 a strip with great prizes donated from the Custom House, The Big Sheep, West Gallery Gifts, Kettlercise North Devon, Robin Mellor, J & A Cameras and Trelawney at Ashford.

She added: “Anything you can give will go a long way to helping these young people get out of the devastating poverty they live in.

“Bring your friends and family, enjoy good cake and coffee, learn more about the charity and help me raise as much money as possible to help these fantastic young people.”

For more information, to purchase raffle tickets ahead of the coffee morning or to donate, visit www.virginmoneygiving.com/ugandaorbust or contact Sarah on sarah.howells@archant.co.uk or 01271 341658.

Anyone wishing to donate to Amigos who would like to do so by cheque can send donations to Sarah Howells, North Devon Gazette, Unit 3, Old Station Road, Barnstaple, EX32 8PB. Please make cheques payable to ‘Amigos Worldwide’.
