Fairly new to Sidmouth but like your comments Seadog. I have noticed some CCTV cameras near the Market, is or was the proposal for CCTV to cover Sidmouth ?

Hi Dave. I believe those cameras are associated with the local 'nite spot' - Carinas - as part of the conditions of their licence. I don't know how good they are or indeed whether they are infact operational - I doubt whether they are digital though.
The local council and chamber of commerce, supported by the local paper, pushed the idea of CCTV a few years ago - the idea was to cover the centre of town in the vicinity of Market Place and expand up the High Street when funds allowed. The rest is history - adequately covered in this thread.
Have any of you heard about a government plan to pay couch potatoes to watch a bank of CCTV screens for money?(On the proviso that they report a crime)
As the Sidmouth CCTV scheme is never going to happen, maybe those who are passionate about surveillance culture could keep a vigil on some real crime spots elsewhere in the country.
The offenders concerned in a despicable assault on a young lady in Old Fore Street several days ago may well have been identified if a decent CCTV system had been in place.
Perhaps they've been bragging to their mates - it'll only take a quick phone call if anyone has a hunch who they were.
Police non-emergency number is 0845 277 7444 - if you know who they are - dob 'em in it.
Maybe now the council and other deciding powers will somehow find the money and will to install a town CCTV system - am sure it would be useful in festival week.
Hardly likely now Abby - the council(s) have withdrawn their pledges and won't have the money to spare for many years to come and the shopkeepers are too busy planting trees.
A dont want to flog a dead horse (just in case Im caught on camera doing so) but Sidmouth has a very very low crime rate compared to everywhere. OK apart from lundy, the Outer Hebredes, Rhum Eig , Muck and Greenland. So a crime surveillance system is understandably not a priority.
You are right -sidmouth does have a really low crime rate compared to other places and the crime that does take place is of a totally different type to that of somewhere like london or even exter. I still get annoyed though when people moan(not people here but others who right letters to the Herald) complaining how rubbish the police are and how they never see police about town. The role of the police is totally different and they do much more of a community role kind of thing. I also know they do a lot of work that people never hear about because it is not seen as newsworthy or not publicised - stuff like working on domestic violence or being out trying to stop the odd drunken soul from destroying the flowers up Old Fore St on their way home from Carinas. They also do the stuff like making sure the festival is pretty much crime free and organising stuff like the Poppy Day Parade. Getting back to the idea of CCTV - it makes me a bit sad that there is even a bit of a need for it as I like to think of Sidmouth as a pretty much safe place....but..... I was the one who got assaulted a few weeks ago by the two drunks on a Friday night on their way home up Old Fore Street - so looking back I wish their had been some form of CCTV. But equally what happened to me was a one off (I hope), and I think as it does all come down to a question of money and resources I would prefer the money of a CCTV system to be spent on tackling other things like the boy racers or underage drinkers which have a much bigger effect on the community as a whole rather than just the assault on me. Yess CCTV would be good for festival week but not really so needed the rest of the year (unless you want to see drunken young men urinating in various places when they think they can't been seen!). My assault also made me realise how hard the police do work - they were brilliant towards me - sadly they haven't caught the two men, and I doubt they ever will, but that's not through lack of trying.
So yes, getting back to the point, crime is a bad thing, but like most things its getting a balance for everything and sadly it all comes back to money.
