For months we have been wondering what this was!! Had been told it was going to be a real ice rink - great we thought!! Now having discovered it's a bowling alley, we are very disappointed. Why does it have to be something we can get to easily by going to Exeter! Wouldn't it have been better to 'do/have' something different that would attract people to Exmouth!! Our grandchildren and many others would have loved it!! It would have been an all round year facility and something 'topical'. It would have given more opportunity for work in providing lessons etc rather than 'just another bowling alley'. Were the people consulted? Where is the planning vision?
I personally would put money on it becoming a derelict ruin! Or be knocked down and replaced with "yuppie apartments" It is criminal to steal a purse, daring to steal a fortune, a mark of greatness to steal a crown. The blame diminishes as the guilt increases
so would i! If the people who attempt to run this town ran businesses the same way they would have gone to the wall long ago -what's wrong with every body????
Not sure if any more work has been done on this monstrosity but I see it has now become a target for the graffiti artists - the east wall has been liberally plastered (how they got to it, no idea!!).
Surely the planning officers must have a say in whether this goes ahead to completion - isn't there a rider in planning permits that says construction has to be completed within a certain period? Not sure.). Also, are there not some EDDC/Exmouth councillors feeling very embarrassed about this whole sorry saga?
Generally once planning permission has been granted, you have 4 or 5 years (depending on the local authority) to commence work on the site before the application is void. After commencement (as in this development), unless a specific condition has been attached prescribing so, the developer can take as long as they see fit to complete construction. Shame really. I wouldn't mind knowing what the planning officer scrutinising the design credentials of the proposal was thinking in accepting that terrible sheet metal on the elevation adjacent to the fun park. Completely detracts from the rest of the project, which otherwise uses (IMHO) some pretty tasteful wood and stone material.
I coincidently was sat in a pub with my "Ears flapping" listening to two chaps talking about a development on Exmouth Seafront. They didn't say which one it was, but there was some talk of the wrong grade of concrete having been used or some such, not being of the correct structural integrity to be load bearing and that there was some legal action ongoing. I am sure it had nothing to do with the proposed bowling alley/shopping mall/nightclub/cafe/amusement arcade/bar or whatever it is. The builders are probably just taking a long lunch break! and that's why there has been no further progress....??????????????????????? It is criminal to steal a purse, daring to steal a fortune, a mark of greatness to steal a crown. The blame diminishes as the guilt increases
From The Journal:
"Councillors criticised the current 'disjointed' seafront development policy for having no real vision or goal.
They highlighted a lack of seafront facilities for beach users while councillor Richard Turner called for the town council to back the Exe Rowing Club's bid to take over the old Lifeboat Station currently used by RNLI lifeguards.
Other future developments could include a watersports centre after the district council offered up part of the Beach Gardens for sale or lease.
While county bosses have also reaffirmed £500,000 for a Jurassic Coast interpretation centre at the Mamhead Slipway and the bowling alley is also well on its way to completion."
'.....well on its way to completion.'!!!!!!!!!!! Have they actually seen it????????!!!!!!!
What do they mean by a "lack of seafront facilities" for beach users? Exmouth beach is one of the finest around , so do they mean more toilets? We could question this 'til the cows come home ... isn't it time somebody actually said what was wanted or are they happy leaving us all in the dark (as usual) with bland meaningless words like "facilities"?
Have now heard feedback from someone who knows someone (!) who went to the meeting on Monday that was hosted by the owner of the building. He has stated that it will be at least 6-months before work re-starts as there are problems with vibration in the building!! I understand numerous tests have to be carried out. Wonder if it's because it's being built on an old filled in swimming pool - that may not have been compacted/settled properly.
Should heads roll?? I'm sure it can't be the responsibility of the EDDC planning department!!!!?
Just how inept are those concerned with this blot on the landscape ? No don’t answer this the answer is self evident.
Why not just knock the whole thing down now, and grass it over. I have no idea who is going to use this moribund site on a Tuesday evening in February.
So the town centre resembles a building site, a seafront that is a disused building site and we are expected to trust these people, WHY ?
There is now a report on the meeting on the Exmouth Journal website. I note that planners have approved a further increase in height, over and above the previous increase - I'm sure those living behind will be overjoyed!?
Just back from hols in Ireland - Killarney. It appears the planners there are able to do joined-up thinking, unlike ours!
I see in the Herald a councillor has stated that the bowling alley complex is 'unneighbourly'! We could have told them that before the ink on the plans was dry. Seems they are not now supporting the wind farm on its roof, as the roof is higher than originally planned, and told the owner to find other sources of renewable energy.
Why not save energy altogether, and remove the whole building?
