Traffic lights were recently installed at Exton, and work is underway to install some at Ebford. Both are at minor road junctions at which I have never seen a build up of traffic waiting to join the A376 - the traffic that has been there has always been waved out by courteous motorists. So why have they been installed, at great expense? As they are now there, could they not be part-time lights, for use only at peak periods? At the moment queues of traffic now build up on the A376 whilst, frequently, one car is let out by the lights, certainly at the early morning rush. Not sure this fits in with the requirement to lower Carbon footprints!!
If anyone from Ebford and/or Exton are available for comment, I would be interested to see if the lights have made much improvement to their lives.
Both sets of lights are now fully operational - and I managed to get stopped by both of them today; one to let a motor-bike out, the other to let a car out - a number of cars queued in both directions. As I said before - not sure how this lowers our carbon footprint!
Makes me wonder if local councillors live up the lanes adjoining the main road! can't see why else the lights have been installed.
Maybe some IMPORTANT local councillors! Mmmm great minds thought alike.
The lights at Exton are a nightmare especially if coming from Exeter, as even if doing 30mph, the traffic is queuing on a blind bend. I anticipate some nice rear end shunts on that one. Maybe its all to do with the extra traffic they anticipate, once the Exton nimbies let the cycle route get finished? It is criminal to steal a purse, daring to steal a fortune, a mark of greatness to steal a crown. The blame diminishes as the guilt increases
I was beginning to think it was only me that thought the lights would create more of a problem than they cure. Perhaps others using these forums either a. don't drive, b. don't use the A376, c. don't care, or d. is an Important councillor!
It appears the lights at Exton are not triggered by traffic or pedestrians:on the way home yesterday, the lights on the main road went to red - with no car needing to pull on to the main road nor any pedestrians in sight. Just random. Result - two rows of traffic stopped, with resultant increase in pollution.
Going in on the A376 this morning, the traffic started queuing at Courtlands and was basically one big queue all the way.With much of the congestion caused by the new lights! It is criminal to steal a purse, daring to steal a fortune, a mark of greatness to steal a crown. The blame diminishes as the guilt increases
I have only been held up once since those lights came on stream so cannot see that there is too much of a problem, the biggest hold up is on the roundabout at the George and Dragon junction to the Clyst St George round about where it is always busy and overly so at peak morning and evening periods. Sadly too many who use this road are impatient and think that speed is the most important thing when driving. Lets take a bit more time leave 10 minutes earlier and drive at reasonable speeds, enjoy the morning (or evening) and have a much better and safer (for everyone) journey. It is far better to be late in this world than early in the next!!
I can only surmise that, either:
a. You have been very lucky;
b. You don't use the A376 much; or
c. You are one of the councillors who has a zapper to change the lights as you approach!
Notwithstanding the fact that there are 30/40mph limits on this road, it would be difficult to go fast at the rush-hour times of day - often, even achieving the limit is nigh on impossible. To go any slower would only serve to frustrate all others using the road.
My point still stands - that the lights are unnecessary and increase pollution. Before them, I was unaware of traffic queues waiting to pull on to the A376 - as traffic on the main road was travelling slowly anyway, cars were always let out by considerate drivers. If the lights are needed, then why not have them only at peak times, not stopping cars, for instance, on a winter Sunday when traffic joining would not have a problem?
