Can anyone here confirm if he was a pupil of the old Exmouth Secondary School for Boys in Withycombe and who can remember the following?
Headmaster: Edward.A.Harrison (Harri) Teachers: 'Doc' Kevern (Science), Coombes (Theatre & Maths), Harvey, Banwell, 'Josh' Jones (Deputy Head), Mills (Woodwork), 'Lopsy' Meakin (Metalwork), 'Cy' Grant (Musik), Haws (Religion), 'Sally' Soughton (Gardening), Phil Livsey (Sport/Gym), Halton, Stredwick (History), Wilson (Art). Hurdley (after Haws) (Religion) Fred Perry (Janitor), McMahon (Class 4c). Head Prefect: Gillard
I may have missed out on a couple, but I think I fared well in remembering all those I have listed. So Exmouth boys, share some delightful rememberances of our Schoolboy life back in the old days when the 'cricket bat' was still used as a punishment (had my bum whacked a few times, I can tell you!!) and smoking behind the Metallroom building was an 'in' thing, not to forget the weekly 'gang-ups' on the Prefects or a quick sneak across the 'field' to watch the girls in the Gym!!.
I attended THE Secondary School from 61 thru 66 until dad said get a job. Remember the bat well. We used the big hollow tree outside at the small gate on the west side to smoke in.
Hi Steve, Thanks for answering my subject on Exmouth Secondary Modern School for Boys and your comments. Yes, I remember a teacher named Wilkinson but didn't know what subject he taught and I now remember another teacher who also taught Geography, namely Eden. Think he was only there in my first two years at the school. I don't remember the old tree with a gaping hole in it though used for a quick smoke, but then again, I'm going back over 45 years. Just goes to show what 'old age' does for you. Hope life in Dallas is treating you well, as it it for me here in Germany. One thing ius for sure, I am certain I could outdo you for the times I either got 'The Bat', 'The Cane' or 'The Gym Shoe' (Plimsole). Fare thee well!!. Regards, Rob.
Back again!! I can also recall a teacher named 'Biven', but not a 'Pinn'. Maybe thats because I left the school in 1961 Steve when you entered it!! One other thing, did you have 'Conker' tournaments in the playground?. Those were a favourite past time with we boys, but Harry Harrison put a stop to it due to thousands of bits of shattered Conkers laying all over the place. Some of the so called 'Champs' were real cheats, coz they baked their Conkers in the oven at home two days before a tournament started, so their Conkers were as hard as cement, not giving anyone a chance to win fairly. I did get my own back though, went home and baked a Conker myself, returned for a match and on purpose, missed the opponents Conker and landed with mine on his knuckles!!. Unfortunately, I landed up with a black eye for that!!. Twas still fun though!!. Rob.
