Let's hope the police take the explosion seriously and take action against the idiot who threw an aerosol can at a flaming barrel, causing an explosion and injuring 12 people. Someone could have been killed because of a reckless fool. The culprit should face the wrath of the courts and the people. If you know who threw the can, please shop him or her.
I agree, it would be a disaster if the actions of this idiot mean the end of such an amazinbg tradition. I think the answer is to scale down the event and keep 'outsiders' out. No-one from Ottery would have been so reckless, everyone in the town has a real respect for this annual event.
Perhaps that was because at first the majority of those watching did not fully realise what had actually happened - even those carrying the tar barrel kept going to the bottom of the street then turned around and ran back again passing where the explosion occurred. As soon as the injuries were evident then the police became actively involved especially as one of the injured was taken to the Bristol Burns Unit.
I still do not see the need for a petition - who will it be delivered to and why?
At one point there seemed a lack of interest until a victim complained....
A lack of interest by whom? Were you there? Are you inferring that the police or officials were not interested in the incident until someone actually went and 'complained' about the explosion? Or are you 'guessing' after having read online articles?
Initial reports in the Sidmouth Herald mention that an aerosol can was thrown into a flaming tar barrel - indeed the first post in this thread is in a similar vein. What evidence was there that the object was actually an aerosol or are people speculating?
How many signatures have been added to the Herald on-line Petition and who will it be delivered to?
