I am trying to find out some history of my house in Withycombe which used to be part of a row of four thatched cottages called Oak Cottages near to the brickyard entrance, they are now only three, and are opposite the pub now called the Country House. I would love to find an old photo of it as the only one I've seen is of the cottage that was pulled down at one end ( mine is in the middle) I know that the Bowerman family lived there in the 19th century, and Elizabeth Bowerman, a laundress, was living there with her niece Betsy, in 1911. Does anyone have any memories of these cottages and the people who lived there? How old are they? They appear to have ancient oak timber frames and jointed cruck roof beams. When was the back extension added, it also seems quite old, maybe Victorian. Anything about them and the people who lived here would be really appreciated,
Hi Pen
I don't know if you've looked at the 1840 tythe map yet, but your cottage is clearly maked on it. The apportionment saya that a Josias Beavis was the Occupier and the landowner was WARREN Sarah under William Thomas Hull.
You can see the original at the Devon Record or look at the digitised version on line at http://www.eastdevonaonb.org.uk/Digitaltithemaps.htm
Hope this helps establish the age of your cottage.
